What I do when I am not on a client site

Four things I keep coming back to. Most of them started as a small experiment and stayed.

Essential oils

Essential oils

I like essential oils, and I like learning how a blend comes together.

A blend works a little like a research question. A bright top note opens it, a middle note carries it, and a base note keeps it from disappearing too quickly. Change one and the whole thing shifts.

My university studies in plant biotechnology dealt with plant extracts, so I like knowing where an oil comes from. Oils are a hobby for me, not a profession: I keep it simple with a diffuser, a few oils I know well, and notes on what worked. You can try mixing your own in the Blend Lab game.

Herbal extraction

Herbal extraction

I do small herbal extractions, a habit that goes back to my plant biotechnology studies.

It is careful, hands-on work: choosing the plant material, the solvent and the method, then seeing how small changes affect the result.

It also helps in ingredient conversations, because I have a feel for how an extract is made. I share the process here, not health advice.

SEO

SEO, out of curiosity

SEO is part of my work, but it is also a passion. I would read about it even if nobody paid me to.

I like the puzzle of it: why one page gets found and another does not, and how search keeps changing now that AI tools answer questions too.

My own sites are where I experiment first, starting with this one. Two of the games on the Play page, SERP Sprint and Crawl Bot, came out of that curiosity.

AI experiments

AI experiments

Most of my AI experiments are about writing better rules, not longer prompts.

I keep rulebooks for each kind of work: tone, claims to avoid, page structure. Capable models help write the rules, and smaller models follow them.

Other experiments include a small memory system built on Supabase, WordPress connectors that let AI make careful edits, and TWS AI Translate, a plugin for English, Bahasa Melayu and 简体中文 drafts that a person reviews before publishing.
